Introduction: The Most Radiant Day of Rabi ul Awal
The month of Rabi ul Awal is the most joyous month of the Islamic calendar — for it is the month that brought into this world the greatest human being ever created: the Holy Prophet Muhammad (صلٱاللهُعَلَيْهِوَآلِهِوَسَلَّم), the Seal of the Prophets and the Mercy to all the Worlds. And within this blessed month, the 17th of Rabi ul Awal stands as the crown — carrying not one, but two extraordinary birthdays on the very same sacred date.
According to the narrations of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), the Holy Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) was born on the 17th of Rabi ul Awal, in the Year of the Elephant, 570 CE. And precisely 136 years later — on that same sacred date — his great-great-great-grandson, Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.), the 6th Imam of Ahlul Bayt and eponymous founder of Jafari Fiqh, was born in Madinah. This is not coincidence — it is divine design.
17 Rabi ul Awal is the doubly blessed birthday observed by Muslims as: (1) the Wiladat of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم), as narrated by the Imams of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), and (2) the Wiladat of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.), the 6th Imam and founder of Jafari Fiqh — both born on this same date, 136 years apart. It is celebrated worldwide with wiladat gatherings, salawaat, ziarat and sadaqah.

Why Shia Muslims Celebrate on the 17th of Rabi ul Awal
The precise date of the Holy Prophet’s (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) birth has been discussed among scholars across centuries. The Imams of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) — the most authoritative source on all matters relating to the Prophet’s life and Sunnah — clearly stated to the Shia community that the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) was born on the 17th of Rabi ul Awal. This is the date preserved in the narrations of the Imams and adopted throughout the Shia Islamic calendar.
“The Imams of Ahl ul-Bayt (peace be upon them) have clarified to the Shi’ah that the Prophet was born on the 17th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, in the Year of the Elephant, 570 CE.” — Al-Islam.org, from the Ahlul Bayt narration tradition
The World Before the Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) — Darkness and Light
When the Holy Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) came into the world in the Sha’b of Bani Hashim, Makkah, humanity was submerged in what the Holy Quran calls Jahiliyyah — the Age of Ignorance. Idolatry was rampant. Women were buried alive. The poor were enslaved. Messages of previous Prophets had been distorted and abandoned. Into this profound darkness, Allah sent His greatest and final creation — and declared in the Quran:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلا رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ
“And We have not sent you except as a Mercy to all the worlds.” — Holy Quran, Surah Al-Anbiya (21:107)

Part Two: Wiladat of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.) — The 6th Imam
| Full name | Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hussain ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) |
| Title | Al-Sadiq (The Truthful) · Sabir · Fadil · Tahir |
| Kunya | Abu Abdillah · Abu Isma’il · Abu Musa |
| Father | Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) — 5th Imam |
| Mother | Sayyida Umm Farwah bint al-Qasim |
| Date of birth | 17 Rabi ul Awal, 83 AH / April 20, 702 CE · Madinah |
| Period of Imamate | 34 years |
| Students taught | 4,000+ scholars across all Islamic sciences |
| Martyrdom | 25 Shawwal, 148 AH / 765 CE — poisoned by Abbasid Caliph al-Mansur |
| Resting place | Jannat al-Baqi’, Madinah al-Munawwarah |
Why is He Called “Al-Sadiq” — The Truthful?
The title al-Sadiq was not merely a human attribution. Imam Ali ibn al-Hussain Zain ul-Abideen (a.s.) — the 4th Imam and grandfather of Imam Jafar — narrated:
“The dwellers of Heaven know Jafar ibn Muhammad as al-Sadiq because he never uttered anything but the absolute truth.” — narrated from Imam Zain ul-Abideen (a.s.) in classical hadith sources
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) himself had foretold the birth and station of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.) generations before his birth, describing him in prophecy as “al-Sadiq — the Truthful One.” His father Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) referenced this prophetic statement when introducing his son to the Shia community.
One Sacred Date — 136 Years Apart
The most extraordinary fact about 17 Rabi ul Awal is that Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.) was born on the exact same date as his great-great-great-grandfather the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) — 136 years later. As the classical sources confirm: “He was born on the same day the Prophet was born, 136 years earlier.” Scholars understand this shared birthday as a divine sign of the unbroken continuity of prophetic light through the line of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.).
The Extraordinary Legacy of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.)
Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.) lived during the transition from Umayyad to Abbasid rule — a period of political upheaval that paradoxically gave him a window of relative freedom to teach. He used this opening with extraordinary effect. His legacy forms the very intellectual, spiritual, and jurisprudential foundation of the Shia Islamic tradition.

- Ghusl (Ritual Bath): Begin the day with a purifying ghusl as a sign of honour and reverence for this sacred double occasion.

- Ziarat of the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم): Recite the Ziarat of the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) — especially the form taught by Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.) to his companion Muhammad ibn Muslim — honouring the Prophet on his blessed birthday.
- Ziarat of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.): Recite Ziarat Aminullah or Ziarat-ul Jamia al-Kabira for Imam Sadiq (a.s.) on this his blessed wiladat day — renewing your bond with the 6th Imam and the Jafari Fiqh he established.

- Sadaqah (Charity): Give in charity generously. The Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) taught: “Sadaqah extinguishes sins as water extinguishes fire.” Honouring his birthday through his teachings is the truest celebration.
- Recite Dua Nudba: Dua Nudba expresses the believer’s love for the Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) and the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) and longing for the reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi (a.s.). Highly recommended on all wiladat occasions.
- Recite Ziarat e Ashura: Honouring the Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) on his birthday includes remembering his grandson Imam Hussain (a.s.) — whose sacrifice preserved the Prophet’s Islam. Recite Ziarat e Ashura as an expression of this eternal bond.
- Attend Wiladat Gatherings (Jashans): Participate in or organise joyful wiladat majalis celebrating the birthday of both the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) and Imam Sadiq (a.s.). Distribute sweets, recite na’ats and manaqib, and educate your family and children.

Why 17 Rabi ul Awal is the Most Joyful Day for Believers
For the lovers of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), 17 Rabi ul Awal represents the fullest expression of Islamic joy. It is the day that gave the world its greatest Prophet — and then, in a divine echo 136 years later, one of his greatest successors. Every year, believers around the world come together on this day to declare: the light of Muhammad (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) never left the earth — it continued through his family.
“Know that indeed it is best to exalt each occasion based on the extent of the benefits which accompany it. All Muslims have agreed that Muhammad (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) is the most important person ever born in the world. For this reason, it is best that the birthday of the Noble Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) be exalted to the extent of the nobility of Prophethood and the benefit which he has had for all humanity.” — Iqbal al-A’mal, Sayyid Ibn Tawus
And the Wiladat of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.) on the same date multiplies this joy. He is the Imam who built the intellectual, spiritual, and jurisprudential fortress of Islam through which the authentic teachings of the Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم) were preserved for all generations. Without Imam Sadiq (a.s.), Jafari Fiqh — the way of life by which Shia Muslims pray, fast, worship, and transact today — would not have been so thoroughly preserved and transmitted.
