● By Qualified Fiqah e Jafria Teachers
Tajweed is essential for reciting the Quran accurately, as incorrect pronunciation can alter the meaning of words and, in some cases, render the recitation incorrect. Following the Tajweed rules ensures the reciter honors the sacredness of the Quran and maintains the integrity of its message. This course is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of these rules, so they can read the Quran correctly and with reverence.
Every student progresses at their own pace, but here is the typical structure most beginners follow over a 10-12 week period:
Weeks 1-2 — The Arabic Alphabet
Students learn all 28 Arabic letters individually, focusing on shape recognition in isolated, beginning, middle, and final positions within a word. The teacher introduces the correct articulation point (makhraj) for each letter from day one, so students never develop habits that need correcting later.
Weeks 3-4 — Harakaat (Short Vowels) and Basic Joining
Students learn Fatha, Damma, Kasra, and Sukun, and begin joining letters into simple two and three-letter words. This is where reading fluency starts to build.
Weeks 5-6 — Tanween and Madd Letters
Introduction to Tanween (the doubled vowel sounds) and the three Madd letters (Alif, Waw, Yaa), which govern elongation — one of the most common areas where self-taught readers develop mistakes.
Weeks 7-9 — Tajweed Rules Begin
Once basic reading is fluent, the course introduces foundational Tajweed rules: Noon Saakinah, Tanween rules (Idghaam, Ikhfa, Iqlab, Izhar), and Qalqalah letters.
Weeks 10-12 — Practice, Fluency, and Transition
The final stage focuses on reading full Qaida passages smoothly, applying all rules learned, and preparing the student to transition directly into the Quran Reading with Tajweed course.
Children typically take slightly longer than the ranges above (often 4-6 months total), while adult learners with some prior exposure to Arabic letters sometimes complete the course in as little as 8 weeks. Your teacher will adjust the pace to you specifically — this is not a fixed-speed group class.
Every teacher assigned to the Basic Qaida course at Al Mehdi Online Quran Center has completed structured training in Tajweed and Tilawah, has prior experience specifically teaching beginners (a different skill from teaching advanced students), and is well-versed in Fiqah e Jafria, ensuring that even at this foundational stage, your child or you are learning within an authentic Shia educational framework rather than a generalized curriculum. Both male and female teachers are available, and female teachers are reserved exclusively for female students, in line with the values many of our families have specifically requested.
Every new student begins with a completely free trial class — no payment information is required, and there is no obligation to continue afterward. Once you decide to enroll, ongoing classes are billed through our affordable monthly hadya structure, which is designed to remain accessible to families regardless of which country you’re enrolling from. For the current monthly hadya breakdown, visit our Pricing page, or mention your country and preferred class frequency when booking your trial and our team will confirm exact pricing for your situation directly.
Q: My child has never seen Arabic letters before. Is this course too advanced to start with?
Not at all — this is precisely the course designed for absolute beginners. Most students enrolled in this course have no prior exposure to Arabic script at all, and the first two weeks are dedicated entirely to letter recognition before any reading begins.
Q: How long does it typically take to complete the Basic Qaida course?
Most students complete the course in 10-12 weeks with consistent weekly classes, though this varies by age and frequency of sessions. Children often take 4-6 months at a more relaxed pace, while adults sometimes finish in as little as 8 weeks.
Q: Is this course only for children, or can adults join too?
Adults make up a significant portion of our Basic Qaida students — many are parents who want to learn alongside their children, or adults who never had the opportunity to learn Quranic reading earlier in life. There is no upper age limit.
Q: What happens after I finish the Basic Qaida course?
Students who complete Basic Qaida typically move directly into our Quran Reading with Tajweed course, continuing with the same or a different teacher depending on your preference, to begin reciting full Quranic passages with advanced Tajweed rules.
Q: Do I need to buy a physical Qaida book before starting?
No. All materials, including a digital Qaida and supporting Tajweed resources, are provided to you online and shared during your live sessions — there is nothing to purchase separately.
Q: Can I request a female teacher for my daughter?
Yes. We have qualified female Shia teachers available specifically for female students, and you can specify this preference directly on the booking form.
