The Authentic Shia Kalima — Full Text

The complete and authentic Shia Kalima, as testified by Shia Muslims around the world, is:

عربی متن (Arabic):

(Transliteration):

English Translation:

“There is no god worthy of worship except Allah. Muhammad (s.a.w.a.w.) is the Messenger of Allah. Ali (a.s.) is the Wali of Allah, the Successor (Wasi) of the Messenger of Allah, and His Caliph without interruption (bila fasl).”

What Does the Shia Kalima Mean?

The Shia Kalima is not merely a recitation — it is a complete declaration of belief covering all three divine authorities that Allah has established on earth:

1. Tawhid — اللہ کی توحید “La ilaha illallah” — The absolute Oneness of Allah. He has no partner, no equal, no son, no rival. He alone is worthy of worship and obedience.

2. Risalat — رسالت محمدی (ﷺ) “Mohammad-ur Rasool Allah” — The prophethood of the final and seal of all prophets, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (s.a.w.a.w.), through whom the Quran was revealed as the last divine scripture.

3. Wilayat — ولایتِ علی (ع) “Ali-un Wali Ullah Wasi-o Rasool Allah wa Khalifato hu bila fasl” — The divinely appointed guardianship, successorship, and immediate caliphate of Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) — without any gap or interruption after the Prophet (s.a.w.a.w.).

“Bila Fasl” (بِلَا فَصْلٍ) — These two powerful words mean: “without a gap, without a pause, without interruption.” They confirm that Imam Ali (a.s.) was the rightful and immediate successor to the Prophet (s.a.w.a.w.) — not a later appointment, but a direct, unbroken divine designation.

The Kalima is ONE — It Cannot Be Divided

One of the most important theological truths about the Shia Kalima is that:

To testify the Tawhid of Allah, the Risalat of Mohammad (s.a.w.a.w.) and the Walayat of Infallible Imams (a.s.) is only ONE Kalima. It cannot be subdivided. It has no parts and sections.

This is not simply a matter of words — it is a matter of divine unity of command. Allah’s Tawhid, the Prophet’s Risalat, and the Imam’s Wilayat are not three separate beliefs — they are one integrated divine system.

Just as you cannot accept Allah without accepting His Prophet (ﷺ), and you cannot truly accept the Prophet (ﷺ) without accepting those he divinely appointed after him — the Kalima reflects this unity by combining all three testimonies into a single, inseparable declaration of faith.

This is why Shia Muslims recite the Kalima as a whole and complete statement, not as pieces. To accept some parts and reject others would be an incomplete and invalid Shahada.

Quranic Proof: Surah Nisa Verse 59

One of the clearest Quranic foundations for the Shia Kalima comes from Surah An-Nisa, Verse 59:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ

“O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those in authority (Olil-Amr) among you.”Surah An-Nisa, 4:59

Who Are “Olil-Amr”?

In this verse, Allah commands obedience to three authorities:

AuthorityQuranic CommandIn the Kalima
Rasool (s.a.w.a.w.)

According to Shia scholarship and narrations from the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), the “Olil-Amr” (those in authority) refers specifically to the Twelve Infallible Imams (a.s.) — the divinely guided leaders appointed by Allah through the Prophet (s.a.w.a.w.).

So we testify our obedience to these three supreme Authorities in our Kalima — by mentioning Allah, His Rasool (s.a.w.a.w.) and His Wali (a.s.).

This is the Quranic logic of the Shia Kalima. It is not innovation — it is obedience to the command of Surah Nisa 4:59, inscribed in the words of the Shahada itself.

Kalima Tayyiba — The Pure Word

The phrase “Kalima Tayyiba” (کَلِمَہ طَیِّبَہ — the Pure Word) appears in the Holy Quran in Surah Fatir, Verse 10:

إِلَيْهِ يَصْعَدُ الْكَلِمُ الطَّيِّبُ وَالْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ يَرْفَعُهُ

“To Him ascends the Pure Word (Kalim Tayyib), and good deeds elevate it.”Surah Fatir, 35:10

Allah describes a special Kalima — a “Pure Word” — that rises up toward Him, elevated further by good deeds. What is this Pure Kalima?

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) on Kalima Tayyiba

The sixth Imam of Ahlul Bayt, Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (a.s.), gave the definitive explanation of this verse.

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) said about the saying of Allah — “Pure Kalima rises towards Allah, and good deed elevates it” (Surah Fatir 10):

“Kalima Tayyiba (Pure) means the saying of Momin: ‘There is none worthy of worship except Allah, Mohammad (s.a.w.a.w.) is Rasool of Allah, Ali (s.a.) is Wali of Allah, and Khalifa of Rasool Allah.’

And Good Deed (Amal-e-Saleh) means faith with heart that it is Haqq from Allah and there is no doubt about it that it is from the Rabb of Aalameen.”

(Tafseer Ali bin Ibrahim, Tooba 18-19)

Understanding This Narration:

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) gives us two essential truths:

First — What is Kalima Tayyiba? It is the full Shia Kalima: Tawhid + Risalat + Wilayat of Ali (a.s.) as Khalifa of Rasool Allah. This is what Allah calls the “Pure Word” that rises toward Him.

Second — What is “Good Deed” (Amal-e-Saleh)? It is not merely an external action. It is sincere heart-felt conviction — firm belief with no doubt whatsoever — that this Kalima is Haqq (truth) from Allah, from the Lord of all worlds. Good deeds that elevate the Kalima are those rooted in this unshakeable certainty.

Key Insight: Reciting the Kalima with the lips is not enough. The Amal-e-Saleh that elevates it is the conviction of the heart — full, unwavering, doubt-free belief that Tawhid, Risalat, and Wilayat are the absolute truth from Allah.

Shajara-e-Tayyeba — The Pure Tree

The Quranic Parable of the Pure Tree

In Surah Ibrahim, Verses 24–25, Allah gives a magnificent example — He compares the Kalima Tayyiba to a Shajara-e-Tayyeba (شَجَرَہ طَیِّبَہ — a Pure, Good, Blessed Tree):

“Have you not seen how Allah gives the example of Kalima Tayyiba like a Tayyiba Tree whose root is firm and whose branches are in the sky. Yielding its fruit every moment by the permission of its Rabb; and Allah gives examples for the people so that they keep doing Zikr.”Surah Ibrahim, 14:24-25

Breaking Down the Parable:

Allah describes this Blessed Tree with four remarkable qualities:

Quality of TreeArabicMeaning
Root is firmأَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌUnshakeable foundation
Branches reach the skyفَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاءِElevated, limitless reach
Bears fruit at all timesتُؤْتِي أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍConstant, never-ending benefit
By permission of its Rabbبِإِذْنِ رَبِّهَاAll under divine command

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) on the Holy Tree

Imam Jafar e Sadiq (a.s.) explained the identity of this Blessed Tree in words that illuminate the entire theology of Wilayat:

“Holy Tree is that tree: Its Root (Asl) is Rasool Allah (s.a.w.a.w.), Its Stem (Trunk) is Amirul Momineen (Ali a.s.), And the Masomeen (a.s.) who are Aal of both of them are its Branches, And the Knowledge of Imams (a.s.) is its Fruit.”

The Shajara-e-Tayyeba Explained:

         🌿🌿🌿 BRANCHES 🌿🌿🌿
      Twelve Masoom Imams (a.s.)
(Aal of Prophet & Ali a.s.)
              |
         🌳 TRUNK 🌳
    Amirul Momineen Ali (a.s.)
              |
          🌱 ROOT 🌱
     Rasool Allah (s.a.w.a.w.)
              |
    ========================
          FIRM EARTH
     (Divine Revelation / Quran)
Part of TreeRepresents
Root (Asl)Rasool Allah (s.a.w.a.w.) — the foundation of the entire tree
Trunk (Stem)Amirul Momineen, Hazrat Ali (a.s.) — the pillar from which all branches grow
BranchesThe Masomeen (a.s.) — the Twelve Infallible Imams from the family of Prophet & Ali (a.s.)
FruitThe Knowledge (‘Ilm) of the Imams (a.s.) — which nourishes humanity at all times

Why This Parable is Profound:

The Root is Firm (أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ): Rasool Allah (s.a.w.a.w.) is the root — his prophethood, his Quran, his Sunnah is the unshakeable foundation. No wind, no storm, no passage of time can uproot it.

Branches in the Sky (فَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاءِ): The Masoom Imams (a.s.) reach to the heavens — their knowledge, their piety, their nearness to Allah is boundless, extending beyond ordinary human understanding.

Yields Fruit at All Times (تُؤْتِي أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍ): The knowledge of the Imams (a.s.) is not seasonal or limited to one era. In every age, at every time, the fruit of Imam’s guidance is available to those who seek it — from Imam Ali (a.s.) to Imam Mahdi (a.f.s.), whose guidance continues even now.

By Permission of its Rabb: All of this — the root, trunk, branches, and fruit — exists by the direct permission and command of Allah. The Wilayat of the Ahlul Bayt is not a human invention; it is divinely ordained.

Three Supreme Authorities in One Kalima

Now we can fully understand why the Shia Kalima is structured as it is. It is a testimony to the three divine authorities that Allah has established in this world:

Authority 1 — Allah (Tawhid)

“La ilaha illallah” The supreme, ultimate, absolute authority. All sovereignty belongs to Him. No being is worthy of worship, obedience, or complete submission except Allah.

Authority 2 — The Prophet (Risalat)

“Mohammad-ur Rasool Allah” The divine messenger who received revelation and communicated Allah’s will to humanity. Obedience to the Prophet is obedience to Allah (Quran 4:80).

Authority 3 — The Imam (Wilayat)

“Ali-un Wali Ullah Wasi-o Rasool Allah wa Khalifato hu bila fasl” The divinely appointed guardian and successor who continues the mission of the Prophet after him — not by revelation, but by the light of the Prophet’s knowledge entrusted to him. Imam Ali (a.s.) as the immediate Khalifa (without gap — Bila Fasl) is the third pillar.

These three are not separate. They are one chain of divine authority. Acknowledging all three in one breath — as one Kalima — is the meaning of true Iman in Shia Islam.

The Living Kalima — From Roots to Fruit

The beauty of the Shia Kalima is that it is not a dead text — it is a living tree:

  • Its roots reach deep into divine revelation (Quran and Sunnah)
  • Its trunk stands firm in the Wilayat of Ali (a.s.)
  • Its branches spread through the twelve Masoom Imams (a.s.)
  • Its fruit — the ‘Ilm (knowledge) of the Imams — feeds the Ummah in every age
  • And the Amal-e-Saleh (good deeds done with sincere belief) causes this tree to grow ever higher, reaching toward Allah

This is why Imam Sadiq (a.s.) connects Surah Fatir 10 and Surah Ibrahim 24-25 — the Kalima Tayyiba and the Shajara-e-Tayyeba are two descriptions of the same divine reality: the integrated system of Tawhid, Risalat, and Wilayat.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What is the complete Shia Kalima?

The complete Shia Kalima is: “La ilaha illallaho Mohammad-ur Rasool Allah Ali-un Wali Ullah Wasi-o Rasool Allah wa Khalifato hu bila fasl” — meaning: There is no god but Allah; Muhammad (s.a.w.a.w.) is the Messenger of Allah; Ali (a.s.) is the Wali of Allah, Successor of the Messenger of Allah and His Caliph without interruption.

❓ What does “bila fasl” mean in the Shia Kalima?

“Bila fasl” (بِلَا فَصْلٍ) means “without a gap” or “without interruption.” It establishes that Hazrat Ali (a.s.) was the immediate and direct successor to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.w.) — without any pause, break, or gap in divine leadership.

❓ Why is the Shia Kalima called ONE — not multiple parts?

Because Tawhid, Risalat, and Wilayat are not three separate beliefs — they are one unified divine system. Just as you cannot accept Allah without accepting His Prophet, you cannot accept the Prophet without accepting the divinely appointed successors he designated. The Kalima is one inseparable testimony.

❓ What is the Quranic proof for including Wilayat in the Kalima?

Surah An-Nisa 4:59 commands obedience to Allah, the Rasool (s.a.w.a.w.), and the Olil-Amr (the Twelve Infallible Imams). This three-fold obedience is exactly what the Shia Kalima testifies. Additionally, Surah Fatir 10 and Surah Ibrahim 24-25 affirm the Kalima Tayyiba and the Shajara-e-Tayyeba as explained by Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.).

❓ What is Kalima Tayyiba according to Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.)?

According to Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) in Tafseer Ali bin Ibrahim (Tooba 18-19), Kalima Tayyiba is the declaration: “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is Rasool of Allah, Ali is Wali of Allah and Khalifa of Rasool Allah.” The good deed that elevates it is sincere, doubt-free belief in the heart that this Kalima is absolute truth from the Lord of the worlds.

❓ What is Shajara-e-Tayyeba?

According to Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.), the Shajara-e-Tayyeba (Pure Blessed Tree) mentioned in Surah Ibrahim 14:24-25 refers to the family of the Prophet: its root is Rasool Allah (s.a.w.a.w.), its trunk is Amirul Momineen Ali (a.s.), its branches are the twelve Masoom Imams (a.s.), and its fruit is the ‘Ilm (knowledge) of the Imams.

❓ Is the Shia Kalima mentioned in Hadith?

Yes. The narration from Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) in Tafseer Ali bin Ibrahim explicitly names the complete Shia Kalima (including Wilayat of Ali a.s. as Khalifa) as the Kalima Tayyiba referenced in the Quran (Surah Fatir 35:10).

Conclusion

The Shia Kalima — “La ilaha illallaho Mohammad-ur Rasool Allah Ali-un Wali Ullah Wasi-o Rasool Allah wa Khalifato hu bila fasl” — is the most complete and authentic declaration of Islamic faith.

It is:

  • One Kalima — inseparable, indivisible, whole
  • Rooted in the Quran — Surah Nisa 4:59, Surah Fatir 35:10, Surah Ibrahim 14:24-25
  • Explained by the Imam — Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) identified it as the Kalima Tayyiba
  • A Living Tree — whose root is the Prophet (s.a.w.a.w.), trunk is Ali (a.s.), branches are the Masomeen (a.s.), and fruit is the Imams’ knowledge

To recite this Kalima with sincere heart-felt conviction — with Amal-e-Saleh — is to rise toward Allah, like the Pure Word that ascends to its Lord as described in the Holy Quran.

“إِلَيْهِ يَصْعَدُ الْكَلِمُ الطَّيِّبُ وَالْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ يَرْفَعُهُ” “To Him ascends the Pure Word, and good deeds elevate it.”Surah Fatir, 35:10
