What Is Laylat al-Qadr?
Laylat al-Qadr, Shab-e-Qadr or the Night of Power, is the night in which the Qur’an was sent down. Allah describes it as “better than a thousand months” and says the angels and the Spirit descend in it by the permission of their Lord (Qur’an 97:1–5). Shia narrations direct believers to seek it in the 19th, 21st and 23rd nights of Ramadan, with the 23rd night most strongly emphasised.
Common Amaal for All Three Nights of Qadr
- Ghusl, preferably around sunset.
- Two rak’ats of prayer: in each rak’at, Al-Fatiha once and Surah al-Ikhlas seven times, then Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh seventy times.
- The Qur’an ritual: open the Qur’an in front of you and recite the dua, then place it on your head and call upon Allah by the Holy Prophet (s), Imam Ali (a.s.), Bibi Fatima (s.a.) and each of the Imams (a.s.), ten times each.
- Ziyarat of Imam Hussain (a.s.).
- Staying awake in worship, and reciting Dua Jawshan al-Kabir.
