Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a): Biography, Life and Devotion to Islam and Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w)

Among the greatest women in Islamic history stands Hazrat Khadeeja bint Khuwaylid (s.a) — the first wife of Muhammad (s.a.w.w), the first believer in Islam, and the strongest pillar of support during the earliest and most difficult years of prophethood. Her life is a story of dignity, intelligence, courage, sacrifice and unwavering devotion to Allah and His Messenger.

She was not merely the wife of the Prophet; she was his comforter, financial supporter, confidant, and partner in the divine mission. Without her emotional and financial support, the early stage of Islam would have faced far greater hardship.

This detailed biography explores her noble lineage, business success, marriage to the Prophet, her acceptance of Islam, sacrifices, devotion, and her lasting legacy in Islamic history.

Noble Lineage and Early Life

Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a) was born in Makkah around 555 CE into the respected Quraysh tribe. Her father, Khuwaylid ibn Asad, was a wealthy and honoured merchant. Her lineage connected her to noble clans of Quraysh, giving her a respected social standing.

Even before Islam, she was known as “At-Tahira” (The Pure One) due to her moral character, modesty and integrity. In a society where women often had limited status, she stood out as a successful businesswoman and a symbol of honour.

Her early life reflects independence and wisdom. After being widowed, she inherited and expanded a large trading enterprise. Her caravans travelled across Arabia, including Syria and Yemen.

A Successful Businesswoman in Makkah

In a male-dominated society, Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a) became one of the most successful merchants of Makkah. She employed men to trade on her behalf and was known for fairness and generosity.

It was through business that she first came to know Muhammad (s.a.w.w). She hired him to manage her trade caravan to Syria. His honesty, truthfulness, and exceptional character deeply impressed her.

He was already known in Makkah as Al-Ameen (The Trustworthy). When he returned from Syria with increased profits and remarkable honesty, her admiration grew.

Marriage to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w)

Despite being older than the Prophet, Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a) proposed marriage to him after recognising his noble character.

Their marriage was built on mutual respect, love and shared values. She was 40 years old (according to many reports), and he was 25.

Their home became a sanctuary of peace and faith. For 25 years, he did not marry another woman while she was alive — a testament to their deep bond.

Their marriage was not only emotional but spiritual. She recognised greatness in him long before the world did.

The First Believer in Islam

When revelation descended in the Cave of Hira, the Prophet (s.a.w.w) returned home trembling after receiving the first revelation.

He said, “Cover me, cover me.” He described the encounter with Angel Jibreel (a.s). Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a) did not doubt him for a moment.

She comforted him and said words that echo through history:

“Allah will never disgrace you. You maintain family ties, you help the poor, you honour guests and support the oppressed.”

She immediately accepted his message and became the first Muslim — the first to believe in his prophethood.

Her faith was instant and unwavering.

Devotion to Islam

Hazrat Khadeeja’s (s.a) devotion was not passive. She sacrificed everything for Islam.

1. Financial Sacrifice

She used her entire wealth to support the early Muslim community. Her fortune funded:

  • Freeing slaves
  • Feeding the poor
  • Supporting persecuted Muslims
  • Protecting the Prophet’s mission

By the end of her life, she had spent almost all her wealth in the path of Islam.

2. Emotional Support

The Prophet (s.a.w.w) faced mockery, rejection and persecution. Khadeeja (s.a) was his source of strength.

He later said:

“She believed in me when others rejected me. She supported me with her wealth when others deprived me.”

Years of Persecution

When Quraysh began persecuting Muslims, Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a) stood firm beside the Prophet.

One of the harshest periods was the boycott in Shi’b Abi Talib. Muslims were socially and economically isolated for three years.

During this time:

  • Food was scarce
  • Children cried from hunger
  • Trade was blocked
  • Social ties were cut

Despite her age and former wealth, she endured hunger and hardship patiently.

This period severely affected her health.

Mother of Lady Fatima (s.a)

Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a) was the mother of Fatimah (s.a) — the beloved daughter of the Prophet and leader of the women of Paradise.

Through Fatima (s.a), her lineage continued through Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s) and the Imams of Ahlul Bayt.

Her motherhood carried spiritual significance. She raised Fatima (s.a) with purity and strength.

Her Rank in Islam

The Prophet (s.a.w.w) consistently praised Khadeeja (s.a) even after her death.

He said that among the best women of Paradise are:

  • Maryam (a.s)
  • Asiya (a.s)
  • Khadeeja (s.a)
  • Fatima (s.a)

Her rank is eternal.

Even years later, whenever a goat was slaughtered, the Prophet would send meat to her friends. When Aisha once expressed jealousy, he replied:

“Allah did not grant me anyone better than her.”

The Year of Sorrow (Aam al-Huzn)

Hazrat Khadeeja (s.a) passed away in 10th year of Prophethood (around 619 CE).

Her death occurred shortly after the death of Abu Talib. This year became known as Aam al-Huzn (The Year of Sorrow).

The Prophet (s.a.w.w) deeply mourned her. He lost his greatest supporter and companion.

She was buried in Jannat al-Mu’alla in Makkah.

Her passing marked the end of a foundational chapter in Islamic history.

Her Devotion to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w)

Hazrat Khadeeja’s (s.a) devotion was unmatched:

  • She never doubted him.
  • She never abandoned him.
  • She sacrificed wealth, comfort and status.
  • She stood beside him when society stood against him.

Her devotion was rooted in faith, not blind emotion.

She recognised truth and dedicated her life to it.
