13th Safar marks the martyrdom of Hussain`s (A.S) beloved daughter Sakina. Sakina was Imam Hussain`s most beloved child. Our Imam was often heard to say, "A house without Sakina would not be worth living in!". Sakina was said to be only 4 years old when she embraced martyrdom in the prison of Damascus. After the tragedy of Karbala, the progeny of Mohammad (P.B.U.H) were taken prisoner by the army of Yazid. They were paraded across different cities before being brought to Damascus, where they were eventually imprisoned. The barbarians that were part of this evil army did not let Sakina rest for one bit. Shimr (L.A) had taken her ear-rings out of her ears forcefully, and whenever Sakina tried to cry for her father and her uncle, she was beaten and asked to be quiet. Facing such hardships at such a tender age is unprecedented in the the entire history of humanity.
Like every four and five year old child, Sakina was afraid of the dark, yet her barbaric prisoners kept her in a dark dungeon. Sakina had been badly wounded in Karbala and during the journey from Kufa to Damascus. Some historians say that due to her constant crying and weeping for her father, she was tied to the back of a camel for long periods of time during the journey which severely injured her. Her clothes had also been burnt a little as the tents caught fire. Surely the pain and grief by this noble lady is unfathomable. One such night in the dungeon of Damascus, Sakina suddenly woke up crying and started to look for her father in every direction. Bibi Zainab (S.A) tried to console her, but she continued crying and said, "O my dear aunt, where is my father? A few minutes ago I was with my father, and he kissed me and said to me that my dear Sakina you will soon be with me. But where is my father now?"
As Sakina narrated her dream, all the ladies in the prison cell started to cry. All the hue and cry eventually reached the ears of Yazid (L.A). Yazid (L.A) immediately sent a servant to inquire what all the crying was about. The servant was informed that Bibi Sakina (S.A) had woken up abruptly from her sleep, and missed her father and started crying. Yazid was informed of the situation, and for his sadistic pleasure, sent the severed head of Imam Hussain (A.S) to the prison cell. On seeing the head of her great father, Bibi Sakina (S.A) she started crying even more. She kissed the head, and held it very tight and asked her father, who cut off my father`s head, who martyred my father, why are we held as captives?
With these words of sorrow suddenly Bibi Sakina (sa) was quiet and there was a silence in the cell. Everyone thought that Sakina had finally gone to sleep again but this was not a temporary sleep, Sakina had now gone into a permanent sleep. Bibi Zainab (S.A) called Imam Zain-ul Abideen (A.S) to check what had happened to Sakina as they thought she had fallen unconscious. When the Imam went over to check on his sister, he noticed she had stopped breathing. In between sobs, the Imam said:
INNA LILLAHI WA INNAH ELAIHI RAJI`OON!
She was buried in the same prison cell. Like her brother Asghar and other martyrs of Karbala, she too was buried without a KAFAN (burial cloth). Her burnt and ripped clothes was all she had when she left to meet her father and uncle Abbas.
May Gods curse be on the enemies of Ahl ul Bayt (A.S). Ameen.
